Refuge Ceremony with Geshe Tsultrim

15/01/2023 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm AEST

A special opportunity

Geshe Tsultrim will give a Refuge Ceremony at the conclusion of the Kopan Down-Under Lamrim course in January 2023.

‘To take refuge means “to rely upon.” We rely upon the Buddha, the Dharma, the Sangha – they are a savior, a liberator. We do not rely upon the Buddha image but upon the buddha-nature. You put the essence of this inside your heart. That way you become Buddha, you become Dharma, you become Sangha.’ Lama Yeshe

In Buddhism, Refuge is a ceremony, a commitment, and a statement of faith. Many regard it as a conferring of the state of being a Buddhist. The rituals of the ceremony may vary slightly according to the teacher, but the core element is the practitioner’s commitment to seeking liberation from suffering.

Those attending will have the opportunity to make a khatag offering to Geshela at the end of the ceremony.

Note: The Refuge Ceremony is part of the Lamrim Retreat coming at the end at 10.30 am on the final day, but those who have not attended the retreat are welcome to join the others for this special event. It will however only be for those present in the gompa, not those attending online.

Please contact if you will be taking refuge for the first time so we can prepare materials for you.

about teacher:

Geshe Phuntsok Tsultrim is immensely popular for the warm and approachable way in which he presents the Dharma and inspires our community. He became a monk at Sera Je Monastery in India, where he was awarded his Geshe degree (the equivalent of a doctorate in Buddhist studies) in 2005. He began teaching at Chenrezig Institute in 2014 after being chosen for our community by Lama Zopa Rinpoche. He teaches in Tibetan with the help of his professional translator, Ven. Kartson.

Geshe Tsultrim has a warm hearted, caring and practical approach to teaching Dharma. He has been the resident Geshe at Chenrezig Institute since 2014. Since then he has taught Dharma from both the Gompa and by the example he sets outside of the Gompa.

There is no need to register for this special event.

All are welcome to attend but please contact spc@chenrezig if you will be taking refuge for the first time.
