Mind and It’s Potential – Discovering Buddhism Module 1

4 May @ 9:00 am - 6 May @ 3:30 pm AEST

About Event:

Over 2,500 years ago, Shakyamuni Buddha gained direct insight into the nature of reality and then revealed the path to enlightenment to his disciples. In the 11th century, Atisha Dipamkara, organized the Buddha’s extensive teachings in the form of a graduated path to enlightenment (Lamrim). The Lamrim tradition was further elaborated upon by many holy Tibetan practitioners, including Lama Tsongkhapa, and these teachings continued to be passed from teacher to student to this present day. When Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche began to transmit these teachings in the 1970s, they came from a deeply experiential tradition of study and practice. This is the core of Discovering Buddhism, a program that gives students a solid foundation in the teachings and practice of Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism.

We start a new round of these practical and inspiring teachings in May 2024, after two introductory weekends with Ven Tony Beaumont in March and April. We are delighted to let everyone know that Ven Pema, one of our best-educated and experienced Chenrezig Institute nuns will be teachings these modules throughout 2024.

The first module, Mind and its Potential, encourages us to examine the mind itself, its nature and functions and how it affects our experience of happiness and suffering. You will explore the differentiation between mind and brain, mind as the creator of our experiences, and the implications of possessing a mind that has no beginning and no end. In addition, you will learn methods to transform destructive thoughts and attitudes and create a positive and joyous mind.

This first weekend is actually offered over three days (4th to 6th May). Then in June, the following Discovering Buddhism weekend (8th & 9th June)will be a two-day retreat on this material, with time for questions and discussion and meditation sessions to gradually come to a firm understanding of the material and how it affects your own life.
