FROM CRAVING TO COMPASSION – Dharma Inspired Practices for Addiction and Recovery

7 June @ 6:30 pm - 9 June @ 2:15 pm AEST

Unfortunately due to a family situation, Tracie has had to cancel this workshop. People currently registered have been contacted. Please let us know if you’d like to be told when we schedule another workshop.

About this event:

This weekend is offered in retreat style, with an interplay of teaching, practice and discussions.  As such it is interactive and experiential.  The June weekend follows on from the February one, as well as standing alone.  There will be a brief overview of the February content, which looked at models of addiction and paths of recovery.  The June weekend will have more emphasis on creating a personal suite of tools based in the Buddhist practices and principles of meditation, self-inquiry, wisdom, compassion, and community, in service of helping each of us create a personal path to the liberation of the suffering of addiction.

The weekend is open to anyone with an interest in understanding the experience of craving and addiction from the inside out.  This includes substance addiction (legal and illegal) and process addiction (food, work, exercise, technology, sexual activity and so on).

PLEASE NOTE: There will be no formal introduction segment in this weekend, and as such you will not be asked to identify why you are attending the workshop. There will, however, be plenty of experiential opportunities to meet your fellow participants.

Also, while we will make the weekend as safe as possible, it is not a substitute for medical or detox intervention.  If you are in current active addiction or suffering from unregulated trauma symptoms, please consult your health professional, or contact the presenter, Tracie Story for a pre-enrolment discussion.  Email address is

About the facilitator of this workshop:

My name is Tracie Story, and I have been a practicing Social Worker, Counsellor and Somatic Psychotherapist since 1991 in a range of health, fitness and educational agencies.  I hold a Bachelor of Social Work and a Masters of Mental Health (Major in Psychotherapy – Mindfulness-Based Therapies), both from the University of Queensland.  I have also practised yoga and meditation for over 4 decades, and am a 500hr trained Yoga Teacher.  I have trained in, practised, and taught mindfulness techniques since 2001, completing a four-year Somatic Psychotherapy Training (Mindfulness Based Core Process Therapy).  I am certified as a Mindfulness Meditation Teacher via Spirit Rock and Berkeley University, the main teachers of which are Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield, and am also certified as a  Mindfulness Mentor from Cloud Sangha.

Closer to home, I have been attending teachings at Chenrezig Institute since 2000, and Spirit Rock online for several years.  I stress that I am not a Buddhist teacher, rather I am bringing the combination of my life experiences together in this offering.

I am a wife, daughter, sister, aunt, great-aunt, friend, woman etc and …….I became addicted to alcohol around 2015, aged 50, though I was using and dependent on it long before then.  I have completed a one month residential rehab, focussed on 12 step recovery.  Since then I have attended 12 step, 8 step, Y12SR, Mindfulness Based Recovery, SMART and Recovery Dharma Programs, as well as using Apps such as This Naked Mind and Reframe.

I am an active member of Recovery Dharma Charlotte, and Recovery Dharma Australia.  I was also successful in being voted onto the Recovery Dharma Global Board this year and have a four year term to serve.  I am committed to bringing this option to people in Australia, alongside the 12 step and cognitive behavioural models.  I am grateful to Chenrezig Institute for partnering with me in this endeavour.
