Dharma Kids

04/06/2023 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm AEST

About Event:

Dharma Kids is Chenrezig Institute’s new program for primary school children. It builds on many years of past children’s programs and includes a few new features.

Starting in 2023 Dharma Kids will be offered twice a month on the first and third Saturdays of each month. The core program includes learning about the Buddha and how Buddhism can help in our daily lives. The emphasis though is still on secular ethics, something His Holiness Dalai Lama often speaks about.

New activities will be included in the program and some will be held in different locations within the Chenrezig grounds such as the Art Studio and Garden of Enlightenment. There will also be a few sessions offered each year that are just for parents. These special activities will be advertised in advance so keep an eye on the website and newsletter.

Saka Dawa is the most sacred day on the Buddhist calendar. It is when we celebrate the birth, enlightenment and death (parinirvana) of Shakyamuni Buddha. We celebrate and appreciate the Buddha’s teachings, recognise his good qualities in ourselves and acknowledge our own Buddha nature.

The day of Saka Dawa is the day of the full moon during the fourth month on the Tibetan calendar but the whole month is meritorious with the benefit from good deeds being multiplied many times.

Between 10:30am and 12:00pm in the Nalanda Masters Garden we will practise the good deed of bathing the baby Buddha. Buddha was born as a human being and it is said that when he was born it rained fragrant water. This is why we bathe the baby Buddha on Saka Dawa – the Buddha’s birthday.

There will also be paper prayer flags to write or draw your aspirations for the rest of the year, origami lotus making, and light and flower offerings to Shakyamuni Buddha and the Nalanda Masters. And because it’s a birthday party we’ll also be offering face painting with extras for children of all ages!

We ask that you register online to ensure adequate resources are provided for each session. The suggested donation of $5.00 per child will cover all materials used in the Dharma Kids program.

Venerable Wangmo is a retired teacher who worked mostly with primary school children as a classroom teacher and teacher of students with learning difficulties.

She also taught in high school, TAFE and university settings. Wangmo spent 30 years dabbling with different Buddhist schools before meeting the Mahayana, and settling into more formal studies. She was ordained in 2020 by our own Geshe Tsultrim.

Please register below – there is no charge to register your child but we do like to have a good idea of numbers so that the coordinator can prepare properly.

A contribution of $5 to cover materials is greatly appreciated and you can do this through the form below mentioning that it is for the Dharma Kids.

Parents should accompany children.
