Chokhor Duchen – the First Turning of the Wheel

About Event:

Chokhor Duchen, one of the four annual holy days of Guru Shakyamuni Buddha, takes place this year on 21st July 2024. On these holy days, the power of any meritorious action is multiplied by 100 million. It commemorates the anniversary of Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s first teaching turning the wheel of Dharma for the first time at Sarnath by teaching the four noble truths.

Chokhor Duchen is also International Sangha Day, when we celebrate the sangha of the International Mahayana Institute (IMI) – the community of Buddhist monks and nuns of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition.

We celebrate this auspicious day at Chenrezig Institute by coming together as a community to engage in prayers and meritorious activities and rejoice in the positive karmic potential created by ourselves and others.

Here is the program for this year’s Chokhor Duchen:

7.00 am – Hanging our big Chenrezig Thangka in the Nalanda Masters Garden   Please come along to help…

7:30 am – setting up extensive offerings to big Chenrezig Thangka; water bowls & flower garlands

9:30 am – Prayers offering these extensive offerings to the big Chenrezig Thangka

10:00 am – Incense puja and traditional Tsang offering in the Nalanda Masters Garden with Geshe Tsultrim

10.30 am – Special Teaching from Geshela in the Gompa

12.00 pm – Lunch with our precious Sangha – freely offered

NOTE: Although lunch is freely offered to all – it is essential to book to enable the cafe staff to identify numbers coming. Book here and use the voucher HOLYDAY.

1.30pm – A teaching with His Holiness the Dalai Lama on 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva – the first of three days of teachings in Leh, Ladakh, India on July 21-23. Chenrezig Institute will broadcast all three events in the Gompa at 1.30pm our time. See full details here.

6.30pm – Shakyamuni Buddha Puja in the Gompa and online. This puja, recalling the previous lives of the Buddha, is celebrated especially on the Four Holy Days of the Buddhist Calendar and removes obstacles and creates conducive conditions for practice.

Offerings on this day are of course very meritorious – you may donate towards the centre’s tax-deductible building fund which enables us to maintain the essential facilities of the centre, towards the pujas offered at the centre, or to support our precious sangha. Make your donation through the CI website donation page here – there is a special link for the tax-deductible building fund, another for pujas and another for general donations (use this option for the sangha donation and make sure you note what your donation is for in the comments box.)
