Chokhor Duchen – Commemorating The First Turning of the Wheel of Dharma – with our Inaugural Nyi Nay Practice

8 July @ 3:00 pm - 10 July @ 8:30 am AEST

This year we are scheduling a very special new event for chokhor duchen

Chokhor Duchen, one of the four annual holy days of Guru Shakyamuni Buddha, takes place this year on 10th July. On these holy days, the power of any meritorious action is multiplied by 100 million times.

Chokhor Duchen commemorates the anniversary of Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s first teaching turning the wheel of Dharma for the first time at Sarnath by teaching the four noble truths.

Chokhor Duchen is also International Sangha Day, when we celebrate the sangha of the International Mahayana Institute (IMI) – the community of Buddhist monks and nuns of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition.

We have always celebrated this auspicious day at Chenrezig Institute by coming together as a community to engage in prayers and meritorious activities and rejoice in the positive karmic potential created by ourselves and others.

This year we are scheduling a very special new event:

Please join us for Chenrezig Institute’s inaugural Nyi-nay practice, with extensive light offerings, to celebrate the holy day of Chӧkhor Duchen (Buddha’s First Teaching) on Tuesday, July 9

Nyi-nay, a one-day Chenrezig practice similar to the first day of a Nyung-nä, was introduced to Tibet centuries ago by Shantarakshita. Participants will start with preparation on Monday 8th and finish after breakfast on Wednesday 10th. On the actual day of the Nyi-nay, we will take the Eight Mahayana Precepts early in the morning, have a gourmet vegetarian lunch, then take only liquids throughout the rest of the day. There will be four sessions of practice during the day, based on the Nyung-nä text but with shorter sessions, fewer prostrations and more recitation of mani mantras, which will be contributed to the annual Mani Retreat. The final session will include an extensive light offering with the butter lamps recently donated to CI by ABC, our sister centre in Singapore.

Ordained in 1987, Venerable Ailsa Cameron is a close student of Lama Zopa Rinpoche and has been editing his teachings since 1984 for the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive. Ven. Ailsa has led annual Nyung-nä retreats at Chenrezig Institute for twenty-seven years.
