Artistic Reflections on Selflessness

08/10/2022 @ 10:00 am - 3:30 pm AEST

reflections on selflessness

According to many Buddhist schools, grasping at the notion of a real and substantial self is the root of all our problems. Yet, where does this self exist? The historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, taught the wisdom of perceiving selflessness- in order to liberate us from suffering. It is by way of perceiving and experiencing selflessness that we will be able to counteract our basic sense of ignorance, or grasping at self. Nagarjuna writes in his Precious Garland (Ratnavali):
As long as there is grasping at the aggregates, there is grasping at self;
when there is grasping at self there is karma, and from it comes birth.

Join Shannon Murphy for a day of artistic reflection in the Chenrezig Art Studio, exploring the idea of the ‘self’ through the age-old tradition of self-portraiture – trying to find where the self exists. This will be a day of conversation, reflection and meditative drawing and painting in a unique studio environment.
These guided artistic sessions are open to all levels, from beginners to accomplished artists, buddhists and non-buddhists.
You may choose to bring your own materials or there is the option to rent art materials to use on the day (for $10 cash)
Please email Shannon if you wish to take advantage of this offer to rent art materials on the day:

Shannon Murphy is a local artist and dharma student at Chenrezig Institute. Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Africa, Shannon Murphy followed a dream to Australia. Soaking up the Visual Arts studies in Brisbane, she’s gone on to explore multiple media, exhibiting, teaching, and participating in dynamic arts initiatives. Stepping out of the studio space into an open-air field study, Shannon has expanded from an individualistic self-exploration into an interactive, impressionistic study of different cultures in relation to their environment.

Inspired by the dharma teachings, such as non-harm and interconnection, as well as the natural world, sharing of stories, skills and knowledge, Shannon is curious to kindle the dynamic relationship of learning, reflecting, meditating, exploring, creating and teaching with a love of the environment and all beings in it. She is the founder of Nurture Creative Nature – a platform to facilitate art as a way to reconnect the internal world with the land on which we reside and depend.
