Art in the Garden of Enlightenment

21/10/2022 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm AEST

The Buddha seated himself beneath a tree on a mat of grass. When he reached enlightenment, he called the earth to witness his accomplishment by touching it with his fingers. Today, in an age of increasing environmental concern, Buddhism can inspire the ecological awareness that’s necessary for a more balanced existence.

“Since I deeply believe that basically human beings are of a gentle nature so I think the human attitude towards our environment should be gentle.” ~ His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Join Shannon Murphy for an afternoon of en Plein-air drawing and painting in the Garden of Enlightenment, to connect with the natural elements and settle your body and mind in this unique memorial garden ideally suited for quiet reflection, remembrance and meditation. It is a beautiful resting place for the ashes of loved ones passed, blessed with stupas and buddha statues and ornamented with a luscious tropical garden.

These guided artistic sessions are open to all levels, from beginners to accomplished artists. Each person will be invited to settle into an area of the garden that inspires them and will be gently facilitated in drawing or painting an impression of their experience.

Shannon Murphy is a local artist and dharma student at Chenrezig Institute. Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Africa, Shannon Murphy followed a dream to Australia. Soaking up the Visual Arts studies in Brisbane, she’s gone on to explore multiple media, exhibiting, teaching, and participating in dynamic arts initiatives. Stepping out of the studio space into an open-air field study, Shannon has expanded from an individualistic self-exploration into an interactive, impressionistic study of different cultures in relation to their environment.

Inspired by the dharma teachings, such as non-harm and interconnection, as well as the natural world, sharing of stories, skills and knowledge, Shannon is curious to kindle the dynamic relationship of learning, reflecting, meditating, exploring, creating and teaching with a love of the environment and all beings in it. She is the founder of Nurture Creative Nature – a platform to facilitate art as a way to reconnect the internal world with the land on which we reside and depend.
